How to Check a BC Contractor's Licence and Insurance

Before you hire a contractor in British Columbia, ask for three things in writing: their business details, proof of liability insurance, and confirmation of who is responsible for permits and inspections. For regulated work, verify the licence or permit with the authority that oversees it — not just with the contractor.

What to ask the contractor for

  • The exact legal or business name and a business address — not just a phone number.
  • A certificate of insurance showing current liability coverage, and the insurer's contact details.
  • Workers' compensation coverage details if the business has employees.
  • Which permits or inspections the work requires, and who arranges and pays for them.
  • A written quote that states the work, materials, timeline and exclusions.

Where to verify, not just trust

British Columbia splits oversight between several bodies depending on the work. Ask the contractor which applies, then confirm it yourself.

  • Regulated technical work such as gas, electrical or boiler systems: confirm the licence or permit with Technical Safety BC.
  • Consumer contracts and hiring disputes: Consumer Protection BC publishes guidance on hiring contractors and your rights.
  • Workplace coverage for employees: WorkSafeBC can confirm an employer's coverage status.
  • Local business licensing: your municipality's business licence office can confirm a business licence for the city where the work happens.

Keep the paperwork together

Save the quote you accepted, the insurance certificate, the permit details, and any written change approvals in one place. If a dispute or an insurance claim comes up later, that file is what protects you.

Common questions

Is a business licence the same as a trade licence?
No. A municipal business licence allows a business to operate in that city; separate provincial oversight applies to regulated technical work. Ask which applies to your job and verify with the relevant body.
Do I need to check insurance every time?
Ask for a current certificate before work starts, even for a contractor you have used before. Policies lapse and coverage limits change.
